Vegetables and legumes-these are both good dietary choices and good for you. Both are high in fiber, which helps reduce your blood sugar. Legumes like black beans and Lima beans are rich in nutrients, especially protein. Tomatoes are a great choice, as are sweet potatoes and peas. Diabetic diets that include green vegetables as a regular part of their healthy eating plan are recommended.

Fruits and vegetables-guests like strawberries and bananas make great additions to any diabetic diet meal plan. They have a high level of antioxidants that help fight off heart disease, cancer and stroke. Both fruits and vegetables should be consumed daily. Bananas are particularly good at lowering blood sugars and also help to decrease weight. However, they can sometimes cause indigestion if too much is eaten at one sitting.

Dairy-casein is usually recommended for both types of diabetes. This dairy protein has become more widely accepted in recent years as there are better ways to derive it from dairy products. It is a good idea to include at least some dairy in your diabetic diet meal plan. Some delicious recipes include whipped cream cheese and whole milk. Low fat cheese is an alternative to whole milk. Other sources of calcium are non-dairy cheeses, fish, chicken and vegetables.

Meals containing pasta is an all day meal, which means that you will need to take it throughout the day. Lunches and breakfasts are usually the preferred options, since this type of meal plan is less restrictive than the typical American breakfast or lunch. Choose a variety of different kinds of pasta and choose low fat or nonfat alternatives if desired.

Saturated fats-these can be found in butter, margarine, fried foods, meats and some nuts. They should be avoided by diabetics since they raise blood sugar levels.
